What we are working on in class....
Reading: Using Nonfiction text features to understand more about a topic. Read nonfiction books at home and have your child point out the various text features, such as: diagrams, captions, maps, graphs, etc. Talk about how these can teach the reader more.
**Homework Choice Boards are due April 28th with a parent signature.
***Our next spelling quiz will be on April 28th.
Writing: Using persuasive letters to recommend a book! Students are writing about their opinions of nonfiction books, and writing letters to recommend these books to other readers. Again, reading nonfiction books at home will aide in this process! This is kind of like that last 10 minutes of every Reading Rainbow episode, where kids talk about their favorite books and WHY they love them. "You Tube" some of those for a little bit of insight!
Grammar: Compound Sentences
Please have your child attempt to write or find a few examples! It must have all of the following parts: Simple Sentence 1, a comma, a conjunction, and Simple Sentence 2.
---EX: I love icecream, and I love cookies. (both sentences could stand alone)
---NON Example: I love icecream, and cookies.
("cookies" is not a sentence that can stand alone, so this is NOT a compound sentence)
IXL Practice: C.4 and C.2.
Math: Reviewing for our Test! Please practice at home with the math journals, and return them daily. Simply changing the numbers can make a world of a different with the partitioning and fraction problems. Students will have to partition rectangles into rows and columns themselves, so they must practice this by hand! A computer will NOT help them with this skill. For example, they may be asked to show 2 different ways to partition a rectangle into ___ (# of) pieces. They need to be aware of making equal shares. Test on Thursday, April 27th- IXL practice = W.1, W.2, W.3, W.4, and V.3. There are no IXL's for "Rows and Columns", so you will need to supplement this at home by changing up the Math Journal questions.
Science: Life Cycles of birds, and learning more info on how to care for eggs, and baby chicks! Hopefully by now you have heard all about Farmer Black and her request for help. Students will need to become experts on life cycles and caring for living organisms in order to help educate Farmer Black's customers! To help us learn more, we have plants, ladybugs, and butterflies in the classroom currently. We have eggs on the way, and will need to take care of them and the eventual chicks!
